continental

Of a continent

Continental means relating to or characteristic of a continent—a large landmass.

In European contexts, continental usually means mainland Europe as distinct from Britain: continental cuisine, a continental breakfast (the light morning meal of pastries and coffee typical of France or Italy).

Continental can also describe climate or scale: continental weather features temperature extremes; continental drift refers to the movement of landmasses.

In American history, the Continental Congress and Continental Army date from the Revolutionary War period.
