carbine
Shortened military firearm
A carbine is a lightweight rifle with a shorter barrel than standard, originally designed for cavalry soldiers who needed a weapon manageable on horseback.
Modern carbines remain popular for close-quarters combat and among police forces: The officer carried an M4 carbine.
The shorter length sacrifices some range and accuracy for maneuverability.
