assault rifles
Selective-fire military weapons
An assault rifle is a selective-fire military rifle capable of both automatic and semiautomatic modes, typically chambered for intermediate cartridges.
The term is often applied loosely—and controversially—to semiautomatic civilian rifles that resemble military weapons: The debate over assault rifles dominated the hearing.
Gun-rights advocates argue this broader usage is imprecise; gun-control advocates use it to describe weapons they seek to restrict.
