breech-loader

Non-muzzle-loading weapon

A breech-loader is a firearm or cannon that loads ammunition from the rear of the barrel rather than the muzzle.

This design, which became standard in the mid-19th century, allows for faster reloading and lets the shooter stay in a protected position while loading.

The breech is the back part of the gun where the firing mechanism sits.

The army replaced its muzzle-loaders with breech-loaders after the war.
