axes
Graph reference lines
Axes is the plural of two different words.
An axe is a tool with a heavy blade on a handle, used for chopping wood or, historically, as a weapon.
To axe something is to eliminate it: The network axed three shows.
An axis is a line around which something rotates or a reference line on a graph: the x and y axes.
Someone with an axe to grind has a grievance or selfish motive.
