brake

Pedal for slowing

The commonest use of brake is as a noun for a device that stops movement; it can be singular (emergency break) or plural: Put on the brakes!

Figuratively, a brake may be anything that impedes progress or activity: We must put a brake on new hiring.

The spelling brake is also used for some archaic and infrequent words in English, the commonest of which is a kind of fern.
