rocket booster
First-stage engine
A rocket booster is a rocket engine or rocket-equipped stage that provides additional thrust during launch, typically detaching after its fuel is spent.
Boosters help lift heavy payloads—spacecraft, satellites, missiles—through the initial phase of flight when gravity and atmospheric drag are strongest.
The space shuttle used two solid rocket boosters.
