tailwheel
Aft landing gear
A tailwheel is a small wheel mounted at the rear of an aircraft, supporting the tail when the plane is on the ground.
Aircraft with this configuration, called taildraggers or conventional gear aircraft, sit nose-up when stationary, unlike tricycle-gear planes with a nosewheel.
Tailwheel aircraft were standard before World War II and remain popular among bush pilots and vintage aircraft enthusiasts for their simplicity and rugged landing gear design.
