tail rotor

Helicopter's rear propeller

A tail rotor is the small vertical propeller mounted on a helicopter's tail boom.

It counteracts the torque produced by the main rotor, which would otherwise spin the helicopter's body in the opposite direction.

Without a functioning tail rotor, a helicopter cannot maintain directional control: The tail rotor failed and the aircraft began spinning.
