waitlist

Hopeful applicants' limbo

A waitlist is a list of people waiting for something not immediately available—a table at a restaurant, admission to a school, a seat on a full flight.

To waitlist someone is to add them to such a list: She was waitlisted at her first-choice college.

Also spelled as two words: wait list.
