bushwhack

Hack through wilderness

Bushwhack has two main meanings united by the idea of rough, wild terrain.

To bushwhack is to cut through dense brush or vegetation where no trail exists: We bushwhacked through the jungle for three hours.

It also means to ambush someone, attacking from concealment in wild country: Guerrillas bushwhacked the convoy.

The ambush sense is especially associated with irregular warfare in the American Civil War, where bushwhackers operated as partisan raiders.
