shogunate

Japanese warrior rule

A shogunate is a Japanese military government headed by a shogun—the supreme military commander who ruled Japan while the emperor remained a figurehead.

The term refers both to the institution and to specific historical periods: the Tokugawa shogunate lasted from 1603 to 1868.

The shogunate maintained strict control over foreign trade.
