sphere of influence
Realm of control
A sphere of influence is a region or domain where a nation, organization, or person holds dominant power or sway, even without formal authority.
The term originated in geopolitics—great powers carved out spheres of influence in weaker regions: China fell within Japan's sphere of influence.
It extends to any area where someone exercises outsized control: The department head's sphere of influence extended well beyond her official role.
