herniation
Tissue pushing through
Herniation is the abnormal protrusion of an organ or tissue through a wall that normally contains it.
A herniated disc occurs when spinal disc material bulges through its outer layer, often pressing on nerves.
Brain herniation, where brain tissue shifts through openings in the skull, is a medical emergency.
The term applies to any such displacement: The scan revealed herniation of abdominal contents through the diaphragm.
