strangulation
Deadly airway constriction
Strangulation is the act of killing or injuring by compressing the throat, cutting off air or blood flow to the brain.
It can be manual (with hands), ligature (with a cord or rope), or positional.
The term extends to anything that chokes off flow or growth: bureaucratic strangulation of small businesses, the strangulation of free speech.
In medicine, strangulation describes tissue deprived of blood supply, as in a strangulated hernia.
