myelogram

Spinal canal X-ray

A myelogram is a diagnostic X-ray image of the spinal canal, taken after injecting contrast dye into the spinal fluid.

The procedure reveals abnormalities in the spinal cord, nerve roots, or surrounding structures that ordinary X-rays can't detect: The myelogram showed a herniated disc pressing on the nerve.

Largely replaced by MRI scans but still used when MRI is contraindicated.
