Lower back affliction
Lumbago is an old-fashioned term for lower back pain, particularly the dull, aching kind that makes bending and moving difficult.
The word sounds slightly comical to modern ears and often appears in period fiction or when someone wants to sound dramatically afflicted.
My lumbago's acting up again.
Medical professionals now prefer more specific diagnoses, but lumbago persists in casual speech, especially among older speakers.
