joint replacement
Surgical implant procedure
Joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased joint—most commonly the hip or knee—is removed and replaced with an artificial one made of metal, plastic, or ceramic components.
The procedure relieves chronic pain and restores mobility when arthritis or injury has worn away cartilage: She's scheduled for a joint replacement next month.
Also called arthroplasty.
