mezzo

Between alto, soprano

Mezzo means middle or medium, borrowed from Italian.

In music, it modifies volume or voice type: mezzo forte is moderately loud, mezzo piano moderately soft.

A mezzo-soprano voice falls between soprano and contralto.

Informally, mezzo-soprano singers are called mezzos: The mezzo was brilliant in the second act.
