canvas painting
Oil on cloth
A canvas painting is a work of art created on canvas—woven fabric stretched over a wooden frame.
Canvas became the dominant painting surface in Western art because it's lighter than wood panels and can be made in large sizes.
The term distinguishes paintings on canvas from those on other surfaces: The museum's collection includes canvas paintings, frescoes, and works on paper.
