tomb

Chamber for dead

A tomb is a place of burial, especially one that is built rather than simply dug—a vault, chamber, or monument housing the dead.

Tombs range from ancient stone structures to elaborate mausoleums: the tomb of the unknown soldier, Egyptian tombs filled with treasures.

Figuratively, any silent, dark, or deathly still place may be called a tomb: The house was a tomb after everyone left.
