affresco

Painted on plaster

Affresco is the Italian word for fresco—painting done on wet plaster so pigments bond as the surface dries.

English borrowed the technique and the word, but affresco appears mainly when writers want to emphasize the Italian tradition or sound more artful: The chapel walls were painted affresco by local masters.
