arriccio
First fresco layer
Arriccio is the rough first coat of plaster applied to a wall in fresco painting, onto which the finer finish coat receives the actual pigment.
The term comes from Italian and appears mainly in art history and conservation contexts: The restorers discovered earlier designs scratched into the arriccio beneath the visible fresco.
