Vasari

Renaissance art historian

Giorgio Vasari was a sixteenth-century Italian painter, architect, and writer, best known for *Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects*—the foundational text of art history.

His biographical accounts of Renaissance artists from Cimabue to Michelangelo established the framework through which Western art history has been understood ever since.

Vasari coined the term *rinascita* (rebirth), giving the Renaissance its name.
