An aureole is a circle of light surrounding something, especially the radiant glow depicted around the heads or bodies of holy figures in religious art.
The word extends to any halo-like luminous ring: The sun's aureole was visible during the eclipse.
In anatomy, aureole (or areola) refers to the pigmented area surrounding a nipple.
