ripple

Pond's gentle disturbance

Ripple describes small waves or undulations spreading across a surface, like water disturbed by a stone.

The word extends to anything that spreads outward in similar fashion: a ripple of laughter through the crowd, ripple effects throughout the economy.

As a verb, to ripple is to form these spreading waves: Wind rippled the tall grass.

Ripple also names a pattern of wavy lines in fabric or other materials. (Capitalized Ripple is a cryptocurrency platform.)
