airbrakes

Truck stopping system

Airbrakes are brakes operated by compressed air rather than hydraulic fluid, standard on trucks, buses, and trains.

The system uses air pressure to engage the brake pads—when air is released, springs apply the brakes, a fail-safe design.

On aircraft, airbrakes are panels that extend into the airflow to create drag and slow descent: The pilot deployed the airbrakes on approach.
