winglets

Upturned aircraft tips

Winglets are the small, upturned tips at the ends of airplane wings.

They reduce drag by disrupting the vortices that form where high-pressure air beneath the wing meets low-pressure air above it, improving fuel efficiency.

The term also applies to any small wing or wing-like projection: The insect's winglets beat rapidly.
