escudo

Pre-euro Lisbon money

Escudo is a former monetary unit of Portugal and several former Portuguese colonies, replaced by the euro in 2002.

The word comes from Latin for shield, and escudos historically depicted a coat of arms.

Chile and Cape Verde still use currencies called escudo.

The term also refers to a type of gold or silver coin once used across Spain and its territories.
