lira

Pre-euro Italian denomination

Lira is the former currency unit of Italy and Turkey, among other countries.

Italy adopted the euro in 2002, but Turkey still uses the lira (Turkish lira).

The word comes from the Latin for pound, sharing ancestry with the £ symbol.
