vigilante

Self-appointed lawman

A vigilante is someone who takes law enforcement into their own hands, punishing perceived wrongdoers without legal authority.

The term carries disapproval—vigilantes bypass due process and act on their own judgment of guilt: Vigilante mobs lynched suspected criminals in the Old West.

In fiction, characters like Batman occupy morally ambiguous vigilante territory.

The word can also modify nouns: vigilante justice, vigilante group.
