real

Not made up

The adjective real has two very busy jobs.

The first is to characterize things connected with reality – a word that is derived from it.

It may be used only for emphasis (real problems) or in contrast to what is false or imaginary (the real world).

The second is in terms and phrases connected with real property, that is, land and buildings.

This is as opposed to personal property (things you buy and carry) and it is also called real estate.

Real is also used as an adverb (real nice), an informal usage disparaged by purists.
