lance

Knight's thrusting pole

A lance is a long wooden shaft with a pointed metal head, used as a weapon by mounted knights and cavalry.

The knight would couch the lance under his arm and charge, using the horse's momentum to deliver impact.

To lance is to pierce, as with such a weapon.

In medicine, to lance a boil or abscess is to cut it open to drain fluid.

A lance corporal is the lowest rank of noncommissioned officer in some military branches—originally one who served without higher pay. (Capitalized Lance is a given name.)
