guilder

Pre-euro Dutch money

A guilder is a former monetary unit of the Netherlands, replaced by the euro in 2002.

The word also refers to the basic monetary unit of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles.

Historically, guilders were gold or silver coins used across various European trading regions.

The painting sold for twelve thousand guilders at auction.
