franc

Euro's French predecessor

The franc is a unit of currency, historically the basic monetary unit of France, Belgium, and Switzerland.

France and Belgium adopted the euro in 2002, but Switzerland retains the Swiss franc.

Several African countries use francs tied to the former French colonial system: The meal cost about 3,000 Central African francs.
