pound sterling
UK monetary unit
Pound sterling is the official currency of the United Kingdom, commonly called simply the pound.
The symbol £ precedes the amount: £50, £1,000.
Sterling distinguishes British currency from other pounds (Egyptian, Lebanese) and appears in formal financial contexts: The contract was denominated in pounds sterling.
Informally, British speakers say quid: That'll be twenty quid.
