guinea
Old British gold
A guinea was a British gold coin worth 21 shillings, used from the 17th century until decimalization in 1971.
The name came from the Guinea coast of Africa, where much of the gold originated.
Though the coin is obsolete, guinea persists in certain British contexts—horse racing purses and auction prices sometimes quote in guineas as a marker of tradition or prestige.
In American slang, guinea is an ethnic slur for Italians, implying dark-skinned or foreign origin. (Capitalized Guinea is a country in West Africa.)
