Timor-Leste

Southeast Asian island nation

Timor-Leste is a small nation occupying the eastern half of the island of Timor in Southeast Asia.

The name combines Portuguese *timor* (from a Malay word meaning "east") with *leste* (Portuguese for "east")—so literally "East East," distinguishing it from Indonesian West Timor.

Also called East Timor in English.

The country gained independence from Indonesia in 2002 after a long struggle.
