buckler

Small round shield

A buckler is a small round shield, typically gripped in the fist rather than strapped to the arm.

Medieval swordsmen used bucklers for parrying in close combat.

The word survives mainly in historical fiction and the phrase swashbuckler—literally one who makes noise striking a buckler with a sword.
