scutum

Roman soldier's shield

A scutum is a large rectangular shield used by Roman legionaries, curved to wrap partially around the body for protection.

The term also appears in zoology for plate-like structures on insects and arachnids, particularly the hardened dorsal plate on ticks.

In anatomy, scutum names a bony plate in the middle ear.

The plural may be scuta or scutums.
