shilling

Pre-decimal British coin

A shilling was a British coin worth one-twentieth of a pound, or twelve pence.

Britain decimalized its currency in 1971, retiring the shilling.

The word survives in East African currencies and in the phrase take the King's shilling, meaning to enlist in the military.

As a verb, shilling means covertly promoting something while pretending to be an impartial observer: He was shilling for the crypto exchange on social media.
