declination

Star's angular position

Declination covers several kinds of turning away or downward.

In astronomy, it refers to the angular distance of a celestial body north or south of the celestial equator, measured in degrees.

The declination of a compass needle is its deviation from true north due to Earth's magnetic field.

In formal or literary usage, declination can also mean a polite refusal: His declination of the invitation surprised everyone.

The word shares territory with decline but sounds more technical or ceremonial.
