equating
Treating as identical
Equating is treating two things as equivalent or the same: Equating success with wealth misses the point.
The word often carries skepticism—when someone equates A with B, a speaker may be highlighting that the comparison is flawed or oversimplified: I'm not equating the two situations, but there are parallels.
