solenoid
Current-powered magnetic coil
A solenoid is a coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when electric current passes through it.
This electromagnetic device typically wraps around a cylindrical core and can convert electrical energy into mechanical motion, making it essential in applications like door locks, starter motors, and fuel injectors.
When energized, the solenoid's magnetic field can push or pull a metal plunger, allowing it to act as a switch or valve.
The car wouldn't start because the starter solenoid had failed.
