permanent magnet

Always-on field source

A permanent magnet is a material that retains its magnetic properties without requiring an external power source.

Unlike electromagnets, which need electric current to generate a magnetic field, permanent magnets maintain their magnetism indefinitely: refrigerator magnets, compass needles, the magnets in headphones.

Common materials include iron, cobalt, nickel, and rare-earth elements like neodymium.
