circuit-breaker
Electrical safety device
A circuit-breaker is a safety device that automatically interrupts electrical current when it detects an overload or fault, preventing fires and equipment damage.
Unlike a fuse, it can be reset rather than replaced.
The term extends to any mechanism that halts a dangerous process: stock exchanges use circuit-breakers to pause trading during extreme volatility.
The circuit-breaker tripped when I ran the microwave and toaster together.
