gauss
CGS magnetism unit
A gauss is a unit of magnetic flux density in the CGS system, equal to one maxwell per square centimeter.
Though largely replaced by the tesla in scientific work (one tesla equals 10,000 gauss), gauss remains common in everyday contexts: The refrigerator magnet has a strength of about 50 gauss.
Named for the German mathematician. (Capitalized Gauss refers to the mathematician himself.)
