joules

Work measurement units

Joules are units of energy in the International System of Units, named after the physicist James Prescott Joule.

One joule equals the energy expended when a force of one newton moves an object one meter.

The unit measures work, heat, and electrical energy: The battery stores 500 joules.

Nutritional energy, though often expressed in calories, can also be measured in joules or kilojoules.
