on-off

Two-state switch type

On-off describes something that alternates between two states—active and inactive, present and absent.

An on-off switch has only two positions.

An on-off relationship is marked by repeated breakups and reconciliations: They've had an on-off thing for years.

The hyphenated form functions as an adjective; without the hyphen, the words work separately as adverbs.
