criollo
Americas-born Spanish descendant
Criollo refers to people of Spanish descent born in the Americas during colonial times, distinguished from peninsulares (those born in Spain).
The term extends to things native to Latin America: criollo horses, criollo cuisine, criollo cacao.
In different regions it carries different connotations—sometimes emphasizing local authenticity, sometimes mixed heritage.
The criollo elite led independence movements across South America.
